Dutch Design clocks from Dutch soil
Teun Zwets' Bubble Clock was created through experimental material research and an intuitive working method. The original design was shaped by hand using a two-component polyurethane, a process reminiscent of rotational moulding, which resulted in unique shapes.
For his first series of clocks, Teun Zwets worked with a two-component polyurethane that reacts and expands as it cures. The resin was poured into an inflated balloon, which was then placed in a wooden mould. By turning the mould by hand, the resin spread across the wall of the balloon, thereby taking on the random shape of the inflated balloon. After a few minutes, the resin had cured and the balloon could be removed from the mould.
Essentially, this was a very simple form of rotational moulding. However, it was precisely the manual process that produced a remarkable result: because the balloon took on a slightly different shape within the mould for each clock, every clock acquired its own unique form.

The Bubble Clocks now available from IKONIC are produced using the standard rotational moulding process in an aluminium mould. The clocks are made in Tilburg and are based on a 3D scan of an original handmade piece, ensuring that the characteristic, randomly formed shape is retained.
