Bubble Clock by Teun Zwets

A standout piece in our design clock collection is the Bubble Clock by Teun Zwets. This unique design clock emerged from experimental material research and an intuitive design approach, typical of Zwets’ work.

For the original design, Teun Zwets used a two-component polyurethane that reacts and expands as it cures. The resin was poured into a balloon and manually moved within a simple mold—a process reminiscent of industrial rotational casting, but executed entirely by hand.

Initially, Teun Zwets produced a small series of handmade Bubble Clocks. While these clocks were unique, the production process was very labor-intensive and the objects relatively delicate.

The Bubble Clocks now available at IKONIC are therefore produced using a traditional rotational casting process. They are cast in a precisely milled aluminum mold on a professional rotational casting machine. This method produces a stronger and more durable clock without compromising the original design.

The clocks are manufactured in Tilburg. To develop the mold for series production, one of Teun Zwets’ original handmade clocks was 3D-scanned, preserving the characteristic shape and appearance of the original design.

The Bubble Clock balances functional timekeeping and sculptural form. It’s a design clock that not only tells the time but also makes the making process and the element of chance visible—making it a quintessential example of contemporary Dutch Design.
