Teun Zwets - Bubble Clock White

The Bubble Clock is the result of experimental material research and intuitive design. For the original design of this designer clock, Teun Zwets worked with a two-component polyurethane, a material that reacts and expands during curing. The still liquid polyurethane resin was poured into a balloon, which was then placed in a simple, homemade mould. By turning and tilting the mould by hand, the (fast-curing) resin hit the wall of the balloon. This simple process is similar to industrial rotational moulding, with the major difference being that a very basic mould was used here, and that the mould was turned and tilted by hand. Because the balloon could move in the mould and was placed in the mould in different ways each time, every clock was unique.

Teun Zwets has brought a small series of these handmade clocks onto the market. The clocks proved to be quite fragile, and the method of production labour-intensive.

The clocks available here at IKONIC are therefore rotationally moulded in the “traditional” way, in a milled aluminium mould and cast on a large machine. The clocks are made in Tilburg (NL). For the shape of the clock, one of Teun's original handmade clocks was scanned in 3D to create the mould for series production.
